How to commision a painting

You may like a bespoke piece of artwork to remind you of a special experience or as a gift for somebody with a particular interest.

Please read this page and contact me with any ideas that you may have.
The "On the easel" web page is used to share the creative progress with my clients. They can follow the progress of their commission on-line and are sent emails when ever the page has an up-dated with a camera shot of their artwork. The idea is very popular and saves on printing images of a developing painting. The web page also adds extra to the provenance of the finished painting.

Please consider the following -

  • • SUBJECT
    • DESIGN (Communicate any special ideas you have)
    • DIMENSIONS (If it needs to fit a specific space)
    • BUDGET
    • TIMESCALES (Is there a deadline for completion of the painting)
    • PRICES (My commissions start at around £200 and prices vary to a number of factors set out below-

    • THE EXTENT OF RESEARCH REQUIRED
    • THE COMPLEXITY OF THE DESIGN & BRUSH WORK
    • THE REQUIRED COMPLETION DATE
    • ANY EXTRA EXPENSES LIKELY TO BE INCURRED
    • THE DEMAND FOR THE SUBJECT MATTER

  • Two way agreement- You maybe excited about commissioning a painting, but it is equally important too that I feel positive about the idea. I ask myself the following questions when considering a proposal.
    • AM I INSPIRED?
    • CAN I CREATE A WORTHY RESULT? "Is the subject matter familiar to me or will i be able to study it or find helpful source material.
    • AM I PROVIDED WITH A SUITABLE TIMESCALE?
I have to be able to agree a suitable time scale to complete the finished piece of art work.

Commissions with general appeal- If a commission is accepted and the subject matter is not too specialist I would complete the painting and show it to the client for approval. If a direct viewing were not possible a quality email image would be posted. If upon viewing the painting it did not meet the clients requirements there would be no obligation to purchase. If you choose to buy the painting my normal terms of business would apply.

Larger commissions or those depicting specialist subject matter- If your commission is large or of a more specialist nature a deposit would be required before commencing work and full payment for the painting upon completion. The deposit and payment would be non-refundable as long as it is kept in budget. Staged progress payments maybe required for high value commissions.
